Tournament tidbits: Utah women
A few gems from Brooke Fredrickson of the University of Utah sports information office, concerning the Utah women’s basketball team and Saturday’s MWC tournament championship game against TCU. The Utes defeated BYU 50-49 on Friday to reach the finals.
–This is the third-straight year Utah has been in the finals and the seventh time in the history of the tournament. Utah has won three tournament titles (2000, 2006 and 2009). This is the first time that Utah has made the tournament final as a No. 5 seed.
– Today’s game was Utah’s 20th decided by 10 points or less this season (Utah is 9-11 in those games).
–Utah snapped a four-game losing streak against BYU with the win.
–Utah is 0-2 against TCU this year. In the first meeting in SLC, Utah fell 56-46 after rallying from several deficits. The score was tied at 41 with six minutes left before TCU went on a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach. At TCU, Utah rallied from a 17-point deficit in the second half, cutting the lead to five points with two minutes left before TCU hit six-straight free throws down the stretch for the win.
– Utah upset No. 1 seed TCU in last year’s MWC Tournament in the semifinals, 69-57.
