Monday practice report

Because of a big Monday morning thunderstorm that left the usual practice field a muddy mess, the Ute football team moved to Rice-Eccles Stadium for Monday afternoon’s practice. Coach Kyle Whittingham said he had planned to practice at the stadium Tuesday, but will probably switch to the McCarthey practice field Tuesday, if it is dried out.
Monday’s practice was the last one available for media coverage and there wasn’t too much to see. The players wore pads, helmets and shorts and Whittingham said the team escaped without any new injuries. Earlier in the day at his press conference he said among the significant players, backup running back Sausan Shakerin was definitely out and starting linebacker J.J. Williams was still questionable.
As for Monday’s practice, Whittingham said it was mostly work against the scout team for the first two units. Toward the end, the Utes did some situational work, practicing last-minute field goals, etc.
For Tuesday’s practice, the Utes will polish up plays for Thursday night and Wednesday will just be a walk-through at the stadium. The Thursday kickoff is at 6:30 p.m.
