Football camp: Day 13
The Ute practice ended a few minutes before heavy rain descended on the valley late Thursday morning. So it worked out perfect for the Utes because the players were able under cool conditions for two hours before the rains hit.
Coach Kyle Whittingham called it “a very upbeat day” and said the team “got a lot of work done.”
Whittingham tracks every play and called the practice a tie between the offense and the defense. However, the defense dominated the final 20 minutes and stopped the No. 1 offense on three plays at the goal line, which caused some serious celebration by the players in the black jerseys. Then at the end of the two-hour session, the players enjoyed watching various coaches try to catch punts while sitting on the shoulders of fellow coaches. Morgan Scalley snagged one of the punts and Brian Johnson got another.
There were still at least a dozen players in “the pit” and Whittingham lamented the injuries “are starting to pile up” and “starting to be a concern.” One of the latest Thursday was freshman wide receiver Kenneth Scott, who hurt his foot and joined J.J. Williams and Damian Payne as players on crutches.
Dexter Ransom, the 6-3, 215-pound receiver who was bound for Arizona before coming to Utah Wednesday, was involved more on his second day of practice and said afterward he was happy to be at Utah and getting used to the thinner air.
There will be no afternoon practice today and the Utes will hold their final two-a-day sessions on Friday.
