Football camp: Day 4

Monday’s practice at Ute Field was described as “real physical” by head coach Kyle Whittingham. He said the defense “stood out” and “got after it pretty good.” The offense, he added, “may be reading a little bit of their own press clippings” with eight returning starters.
There was a lot of movement on the depth chart this week.
Justin Taplin-Ross was moved from strong safety to free safety and true freshman Brian Blechen now tops the chart at strong safety.
In other moves:
– James Aiono has been moved from defensive tackle to end and is now listed as the No. 2 behind Junior Tui’one on the right side. At the left spot, Christian Cox is listed ahead of Derrick Shelby.
– Tevita Stevens and John Cullen are now all alone in the No. 1 spots at right guard and left tackle, respectively.
– The starting middle linebacker job is a three-way competition with Matt Martinez, Chaz Walker and Jamel King sharing the No. 1 spot on the depth chart.
– Wide receiver Martavious “Mo” Lee has completed his junior college academic work and could begin practing with Utah as early as Tuesday. He watched Monday’s practice in street clothes.
On Tuesday, the Utes will don full pads after making it through the NCAA-mandated acclimatization period. The first two-a-day is set for Wednesday with a scrimmage set for Thursday.
