Utes after a couple of point guards and more

With players leaving the Ute basketball program right and left with perhaps more still to come, the Utes need to find some replacements and soon.
That’s why coach Jim Boylen and his assistants have been out beating the bushes for recruits for the past few weeks. When I talked to Boylen last week he was in Arizona, on Monday he was in Nebraska and Tuesday he was in Texas. Later this week, he’ll be in Indianapolis for the Final Four.
By NCAA rules, Boylen can’t talk about which players he is recruiting. However, based on where he’s been, I can tell you who the Utes are recruiting.
The Utes are looking for another point guard to give the team experience with Luka Drca graduating. They are looking at Josh Watkins out of Howard Community College and Joe Ragland from North Platte CC in Nebraska. Both are 6-foot guards, who were among the top JC guards in the country this year. Watkins, who averaged 14 points and 4 assists, led his team to the NJCAA title and was named the MVP, while Ragland averaged 18.4 points on 56 percent shooting, including 45 percent from 3-point range and 4 assists per game. I think the Utes would be thrilled to snag either player.
The player from Arizona is Stephen Rogers, who averaged 21 points on 42-percent 3-point shooting last year for Mesa Community College. Rogers is returned LDS missionary, who redshirted a year at Arizona State before going to Mesa last year. He has already made a visit to Utah State and is reportedly interested in New Mexico, UC-Santa Barbara, Colorado and Wichita State.
The aforementioned players will be making visits to Utah and will have the chance to sign letters of intent beginning April 14.
