Utes show diversity and depth in big victory
The Utah basketball team put together its best overall effort of the season tonight in trouncing Michigan 68-52.
Actually, it wasn’t a trouncing, as the Utes led by just four with five minutes left before pulling away. It makes up a bit for last week’s game with Idaho State where the Utes led by 26 in the second half before winning by 12.
The Utes showed tonight their diversity and depth. Jace Tavita, who hasn’t played much lately, played 20 minutes, mostly to guard future NBA player Manny Harris, who still came up with 25 points, making several contested baskets. On other hand, Jordan Cyphers only played a couple of minutes and Shawn Glover didn’t play for the first time all year.
Once again, David Foster was the man, scoring 10 points with 6 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. He’s becoming such a presence down low, that teams are aware of him and either staying away from the basket or altering their shots. Michigan shot just 34 percent from the field tonight.
Freshman Marshall Henderson showed why he’s known as a streak shooter as he hit 4 of 6 3-pointers in the first half and went 0-for-5 in the second half. Still he made a team-high 22 points and came up with a couple of key 2-point baskets in the second half.
Carlon Brown has his best game with 12 points 8 rebounds and 5 assists. He’s starting to play under control more and if his shots start falling, he could have a big year.
It was a big win for the Utes, who hope to do the same Saturday when Oklahoma comes to town for a 2 p.m. game.
