Monday injury update
Utah strong safety Joe Dale will be out 3-4 weeks with a knee injury suffered early in Saturday’s 35-15 win at UNLV. Head coach Kyle Whittingham declined to discuss specifics.
In other injury news, Whittingham revealed that quarterback Terrance Cain tweaked his ankle in the first half. The starter went on to play the rest of the game and the injury is not expected to be an issue this week.
Shaky Smithson (high ankle sprain) should also be good to go when the Utes host Air Force Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Whittingham said he could have played in an emergency situation last week. Since Smithson wasn’t quite 100 percent, however, Whittingham said the decision was made to use Luke Matthews in his place in a package of plays at UNLV.
Whittingham added that defensive lineman Lei Talamaivao (cracked fibula) and offensive lineman Walter Watts (re-aggravated knee) are making progress, but are doubtful to play this week.
