Monday injury update
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said there were only four injuries of significance to update this week.
Topping the list was the status of running back Sausan Shakerin (shoulder, wrist) and dual threat Shaky Smithson (high ankle sprain).
Whittingham said Shakerin, who hasn’t played since getting injured at the end of a 46-yard run at San Jose State on Sept. 12, will play. He’ll have his cast removed this week.
Smithson is also expected to play. He’s listed as probable.
Two other Utes, however, won’t be on the field Saturday at UNLV. Defensive tackle Lei Talamaivao (cracked fibula) and offensive lineman Walter Watts (re-aggravated knee injury) are still sidelined.
Whittingham is optimistic that both will be available for the Air Force game on Oct. 24. That determination, though, won’t be made until next week.
