Saturday's practice
Utah’s offensive line situation for Thursday’s season opener against Utah State is improving. After Saturday morning’s practice, head coach Kyle Whittingham said that right guard Walter Watts (knee scope) is now probable for the game.
The improved outlook, he said, was based on what Watts was able to do in practice. Barring a setback over the weekend, the junior could very well return to the line-up when practice resumes Monday.
“It’s huge. He’s a starter. Any time you get a starter back that’s a big plus,” Whittingham said. “We’re hoping for that and we should know on Monday.”
If Watts is able to return, Whittingham said the starting offensive line against USU will likely feature guard Tevita Stevens and tackle Zane Beadles on the left side; center Zane Taylor in the middle; with Watts and tackle Tony Bergstrom manning the right side.
As for the season-opening status of defensive end Koa Misi (back) and left guard Caleb Schlauderaff (knee), Whittingham said both will come down to the wire.
Quarterback Jordan Wynn suffered a “bump or a bruise” on his right arm and left practice with an ice pack on it. Whittingham didn’t think it was anything major.
Terrance Cain took a majority of the snaps with the No. 1 offense in practice.
Even so, Whittingham said there was no update on the starting quarterback competition.
