Misi now questionable
Injured defensive end Koa Misi, who has been sidelined for more than a week with a back injury, returned to practice Friday at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
“He’s getting a little better each day,” said Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. “He’s no where near ready to play a game, but making progress. No steps backwards.”
MIsi’s condition, he added, is “questionable” for Thursday’s season opener against Utah State.
“Questionable means there’s a shot,” Whittingham said.
Defensive line coach John Pease believes that Misi may be ahead of schedule. The senior, who was recently elected to be a team captain, did some jogging and agility drills. Pease noted that Misi’s back wasn’t bothering him during the activities.
Whittingham said Misi’s availability to play Thursday would probably come down to the wire.
However, if things come together, there’s a chance he can play.
“If he’s cleared 100 percent and the downside is limited . . . yes,” Whittingham said. “He’s ready. He’s game-ready. He’s a proven guy.”
Right guard Walter Watts also returned to practice. His status will be re-evaluated Saturday when it is known how his knee reacts to Friday’s practice work.
Left guard Caleb Schlauderaff, Whittingham said, is still “shut down” following a knee injury earlier in the week.
