Camp update: 1st scrimmage
Thursday’s scrimmage at Rice-Eccles Stadium failed to produce an immediate answer for who’ll become Utah’s next starting quarterback. Head coach Kyle Whittingham wants to evaluate the film first and said the pecking order between hopefuls Corbin Louks, Terrance Cain and Jordan Wynn will be unveiled in a depth chart to be released Friday morning.
Since most of the scrimmage was closed to the media and no statistics were kept, the only thing to go off of is what the coaches and the players thought and notes provided by the Sports Information Department.
Cornerback Brandon Burton thought all three looked pretty good. He declined, however, to discuss specifics. Whittingham and offensive coordinator Dave Schramm also kept their comments general.
According to the SID report, each quarterback played with the No. 1 offense. Cain teamed with Eddie WIde on a 60-yard touchdown pass and Wynn connected with Jereme Brooks on a 35-yard scoring strike.
Running back Sausan Shakerin took a direct snap and scored on a 3-yard run and kicker Ben Vroman went 7-for-7 on field goals.
On defense, Mo Neal and Tyson Clements intercepted passes. Junior Tui’one made two tackles for loss and J.J. WIlliams broke up a pass.
The special teams highlight was a punt return for a touchdown by Justin Taplin-Ross.
SIDELINED: Several starters did not participate in the scrimmage. The list includes linebackers Stevenson Sylvester, Mike Wright and Kepa Gaison; safeties Robert johnson and Joe Dale; defensive end Koa Misi; left tackle Zane Beadles; running back Matt Asiata; and wide receiver David Reed.
