Media banned from majority of U.'s Thursday's scrimmage

Not much out of the ordinary happened at Wednesday afternoon’s practice except that backup cornerback Kamaron Yancy limped off with a dislocated toe.
After practice, Ute coach Kyle Whittingham becamse a little testy when I questioned him about keeping the media out of the majority of Thursday’s upcoming scrimmage. I understand he had already answered the question in the morning and said it was to eliminate “distractions” but to me he really didn’t address the issue.
We media types have been coming to practices and scrimmages for years and I can’t believe we’re going to bother the players by standing on the sideline. If we do, heaven help them when they play in front of 55,000 at Oregon next month.
The main reason, I think, is because the Ute coaches want to keep some stuff secret and they feel too much information might get out if they allowed us media guys to see the whole scrimmage.
Another theory I have is that the Utes already know who one or perhaps both of the quarterback candidates will be. If we’re there keeping track of every throw and one of the top two has a bad day, it wouldn’t look good if he wasn’t eliminated from the three QB candidates. The same goes for a guy who may not be in the top two, who happens to have a great day and is still eliminated. Even though Whittingham said the scrimmage means a lot, the decision on which two QBs emerge, will be based on several factors, not just Thursday’s scrimmage.
Personally, I’m glad he is not letting us come for the first 75 minutes. That gives me an extra hour to sleep tomorrow.
