California corner chooses Utah

Joseph Smith, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound cornerback from Norco High School in California, has given Utah an early recruiting commitment. Smith, who made 40 tackles (31 unassisted) and three interceptions last season, plans to sign a letter-of-intent with the Utes in February.
Smith said the program’s undefeated season was the primary factor in his decision. He watched the Sugar Bowl and is impressed with the Utes’ 14-game winning streak, the longest active run in the nation.
Iowa State, Wyoming and New Mexico were among the other schools that actively recruited Smith.
