Utes "winning" attitude has made a difference
Since Christmas, the Utah basketball team has gone 10-2 to improve to 16-7 on the season and put themselves in prime position for an NCAA berth.
According to Ute coach Jim Boylen, it has a lot to do with a change in his coaching philosophy from “getting better” to winning.
Boylen said he has always been most concerned about his team getting better every day and figured if they did that, the winning would go along with it. But the day after Christmas when his brother, Bobby, was in town, the Ute coach got some timely advice from his older brother as they drove up to Park City.
“He made a suggestion — you’ve already gotten better, maybe it’s time to talk about winning,” Boylen said. “I saw the light a little bit. With four seniors with the time we’ve been together and the schedule we’ve played, it was time to start talking about winning. So we did and I thought our team responded.”
If the Utes keep winning, they may get their first NCAA berth in four years. Next up in Wednesday night’s big game against co-MWC leader, San Diego State.
