Extra points from Signing Day
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham acknowledged that the Utes were “right there until the end” with highly touted Timpview offensive lineman Xavier Su’a-Filo, who ultimately opted to sign with UCLA.
Whittingham said it was a “Signing Day decision.” He spoke with Su’a-Filo Tuesday night, but on Wednesday the player told the coach that UCLA was a better fit for him.
“We took our best shot and he ended up going in a different direction,” said Whittingham, who called Su’a-Filo “a tremendous player.”

Whittingham praised his assistant coaches for their efforts. In particular, he noted the work of Jay Hill with Highland’s Latu Heimuli; Aaron Alford in securing the signature of Texas defensive lineman Siosaia Tuipulotu; and Morgan Scalley for his hustle in the Lone Star state.

Given Utah’s success in Texas, Whittingham announced that a third recruiter will likely be added to the mix — covering the Austin and San Antonio regions. It could be the offensive line coach he hopes to hire by the end of the week.

Whittingham discussed the quarterback situation in a bit of detail. While explaining that Corbin Louks, Terrance Cain, Jordan Wynn and DeVonte Christopher will all compete for the starting job this spring, Whittingham noted some differences.
Louks is the frontrunner because of his experience in the program and is expected to be pushed by Cain, who is coming off a stellar juco campaign.
Whittingham said Wynn has the most work to do physically and that Christopher may have a role as a change-up or hybrid guy like Eric Weddle or Matt Asiata have been. He could also see action at wide receiver.
