More travel woes for Ute BB team
Last year when it came to travel, it seemed like everything that could go wrong, did go wrong for the Utah basketball team. The Utes had several flights delayed by weather or other factors, which may or may not have affected the Utes’ dismal road play.
In Monday’s press conference, coach Jim Boylen talked about some of the things that went wrong during last year’s TCU-Wyoming road swing, the trip the Utes are on again this week. He said the Utes’ charter flight was delayed and the team didn’t get to the hotel “until 4:30 in the morning” although according to another Ute official, he “mis-remembered” by about four hours.
This year, the Utes decided to go early enough to get settled in Fort Worth, practicing Tuesday morning and scheduling a flight around noon. So what happens? The American Airlines flight was cancelled due to mechanical problems. Except for assistant coach Jeff Smith, who caught a Delta flight to get to Dallas in time to watch a recruit play, the rest of the team went back to the U. for a few hours before catching a later flight, which got them to Fort Worth in the early evening.
At least they arrived in time for a good night’s sleep before Wednesday night’s game (5:30 p.m. MST on The Mtn.).
With San Diego State knocking off UNLV in Las Vegas Tuesday night, the importance of this week’s road games has become even more important, because SDSU is now plus-3 in the MWC standings with Utah and four other teams plus-1.
