Beadles will return for his senior season
Although he was pleased with what his evaluation from the National Football League said, starting left tackle Zane Beadles confirmed he will return to Utah for his senior season.
“I’m sticking around,” he said Friday evening.
Beadles, a 6-foot-4, 305-pound all-conference honoree, explained that he wasn’t really giving serious thought to turning pro this year.
“I just kind of wanted to get a feel for where I’m at, get my name out there and see where I can move up to,” Beadles said. “I was pleased with the results, but I want to stick around, play another year and get my degree.”
As for teammates Paul Kruger and Sean Smith, Utah’s other underclassmen who requested NFL evaluations, Beadles was unaware of their intentions.
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham confirmed that all three players had heard back from the NFL. Smith, in fact, had a scheduled meeting with Whittingham on Friday.
Kruger, he added, was “weighing his options” as of late Thursday night.
Calls to Smith and Kruger were not immediately returned Friday. Kruger, however, is no longer listed in the University of Utah student directory.
According to NFLdraftscout.com, the 6-foot-5, 265-pound junior-to-be is ranked as the third best draft prospect at defensive end. Kruger, a returned LDS Church missionary who turns 23 next month, made 16.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks this season.
Smith, a 6-foot-3, 214-pound junior who led the Utes with five interceptions, is ranked third at cornerback by the Web site and is projected as a first or second round draft pick.
