Not another LaVell
NEW ORLEANS — A Louisiana reporter asked Utah coach Kyle Whittingham if he planned to have a LaVell Edwards-type career with the Utes.
“Wow. Tough question. I mean, he was there 30-some odd years. I had a chance to play for Coach Edwards. I have a great deal of respect for him and what he did there,” Whittingham said. “I’m not sure that’s me. I’m not sure that’s my master plan. I love Utah. I’m just not sure I want — you talk about I’ve been doing it four years, 26 more years would put me (age) 70-something. No, I can tell you right now, I’m not going to go that far.”
After drawing laughter from the assembled media at Thursday morning’s press conference, Whittingham continued his comments.
“I love it here. I hope to be here for a while longer,” he said. “But the JoePa (Joe Paterno) of the world, that, I can guarantee you, that’s not going to be me. So no, I guess, is the answer to that. That’s the short version.”
