Who's going to win Saturday's game?
I’m not back in Michigan with the Utah players, coaches and fans, nor with Dirk Facer and Brad Rock, who will be covering tomorrow’s game for the Deseret News. But I will be watching Saturday’s game with interest after watching the Utes for the past month, attending more than a dozen practices and scrimmages.
I’ve been impressed with the Utes’ attitude so far and the quiet confidence they show. It appears to be the most talented Ute team since the 2004 squad with more experience and depth at most positions.
Brian Johnson has been very accurate in his passing and although he hasn’t run much in practice, he showed enough flashes last year that he can be an effective runner for the Utes when he needs to be. Darrell Mack has shown what he can do and Matt Asiata may be even better, but hasn’t had a chance to display his talents yet. The receivers, led by Brent Casteel, Bradon Godfrey and newcomer David Reed are talented and the position is deeper than most people figured.
Defensively, the backfield is rock solid as are the ends, Paul Kruger and Koa Misi. The question marks are the tackles and the linebackers who are inexperienced. However the coaches have been raving about the speed of this year’s defense, which is great unless an opponent can pound it up the middle.
Then there’s Louie Sakoda, who is among the top punters and placekickers in the nation. He could make a big difference with his ability to pin opponents inside the 20 and he’s deadly accuracy on placekicks.
As for the outcome, it’s hard to tell. While I think Utah is improved over last year, how good are the Wolverines? I really can see the Utes winning by two touchdowns or losing by two touchdowns. But if I have to make a prediction, I’ll say Utah 16-13 on the strength of three Sakoda field goals and a Johnson-to-Casteel TD pass. Of course if any key players get hurt like in last year’s opener, all bets are off.
How do you think the game will turn out?
