Camp report: Day 5
Utah’s first day in full pads wasn’t accompanied by a lot of sunshine. Rain fell throughout much of the morning practice.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham, however, called it a “mild drizzle” and said it wasn’t a factor.
“We got a lot done and guys are starting to separate themselves,” he said. “It was good work, just like we’ve seen the first four days as far as the hustle and the intensity.”
The two-hour practice featured 20 live reps, including a 70-yard touchdown run by Matt Asiata.
“He’s a load now,” said Whittingham, who noted that wide receiver David Reed, safety Deshawn Richard and defensive lineman Sealver Siliga also performed well.
“Those four guys really did some good things today,” he said.
EXTRA POINTS: Cornerback Brice McCain sprianed his left ankle, but he expects to be ready to go when the team holds its first two-a-day tomorrow . . . Tight end Neli A’asa, who had a sore knee scoped earlier in the week, dressed and spent the practice on the sidelines working out in “The Pit.” He’s expected to return to full action on Aug. 18 . . . After Saturday’s double session at the practice fields, camp shifts to the Ute Baseball Field next week.
