Kaufusi situation is what it is . . . for now
Don’t assume too much when it comes to Kyle Whittingham’s comments concerning Keni Kaufusi. The coach wasn’t misquoted. He used his words carefully. And as always, Whittingham is going to let the judicial process run its course before making a final decision.
The tone of his remarks, though, paint the situation as somewhat grim.
“Given what we have learned from the police concerning this situation, it is very doubtful that Keni will become a part of our program,” Whittingham said. “At this time, removing our offer of financial aid seems to be in order.”
Whittingham didn’t accidentally use the terms “very doubtful” and “seems to be in order.” Neither, in my opinion, can be translated into “never” and/or “see you later Keni.”
It’s a wait-and-see thing.
As for the potential loss of Kaufusi, it’s a blow to the Utes — hurting their depth on the defensive line.
However, Whittingham and defensive coordinator Gary Andersen have a proven track record of finding guys to get the job done up front.
And odds are they’ll do it again — with or without Kaufusi.
