Utes celebrate first tennis title in 18 years
It got lost in the shuffle with everything going on in the sports world, but the University of Utah men’s tennis team won its first league title in 18 years last week.
The Utes won three straight matches by 4-3 margins last week to capture a share of the Mountain West Conference title, the first for a Ute team since 1990.
The clincher was a 4-3 victory over BYU in Provo Saturday that came down to the final match.
“I’m extremely proud of the job the guys did,” said longtime Ute coach F.D. Robbins. “Winning the Mountain West Conference title at BYU by having our fifth-year senior clinch the match at 3-3 was great for us.”
Robbins was referring to No. 2 player Miron Mann, who clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over BYU’s Thomas Shubert. Utah’s No. 1 player, senior Zach Ganger, finished the MWC season undefeated with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over BYU’s Jonathan Sanchez.
With a 5-1 record, the Utes finished in a tie with New Mexico and TCU for the MWC title. Unfortunately, the Utes lost the tiebreaker and will open the MWC tournament next week in Fort Worth, Texas as the No. 3 seed. Utah will meet San Diego State in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
