Utes trying to make the most of disrespected tournament
So the Utes have made it to the Elite Eight for the first time in a decade.
OK, it’s not THAT Elite Eight, but the Utah baskebtall team is trying to make the best of the tournament it was invited to, the College Basketball Invitational.
As expected, the tourney isn’t getting any respect, as TV commentators as well as columnists around the country are taking the opportunity to make fun of the tourney and say it isn’t needed.
Maybe they’re right.
But as far as the Utes are concerned, they are going to try to go as far as they can, which will not only help for next year when all but one of their top players return, but will bring some consolation to what has been a somewhat disappointing season.
As I said earlier in the week, there isn’t a team in the CBI the Utes can’t beat, even if they have to play on the road. They proved it Wednesday night with an 81-69 victory at UTEP and they’ll face a similar team Monday in Tulsa, another Conference USA team with a similar record to UTEP’s at 21-13.
Utah is now 18-14 and can get to 20 wins with a win Monday and on Wednesday in the semifinals, against either Bradley or Ohio. If that happens the Utes will be in the finals with the possibility of three more games against either Virginia, Old Dominion, Houston or Valparaiso. If it does happen, let’s hope it isn’t Valparaiso, or else the tournament will be even more of a laughingstock.
