Utes get two players on all-MWC second team
Despite its sixth-place finish, the Utah men’s basketball team placed two players on the all-MWC teams that were announced Monday afternoon.
I figured Luke Nevill and Johnnie Bryant would earn all-MWC honors, but figured one would make the second team and the other the third team. Instead, both players were selected to the second team, making the Utes the only team besides BYU with two players among the top 10 honored players in the conference.
Otherwise, the Utes were shut out on the postseason awards.
Lawrence Borha was a candidate for defensive players of the year honors, which went to Air Force’s Tim Anderson. UNLV’s Lon Kruger earned coach of the year honors, Colorado State’s Marcus Walker was newcomer of the year and San Diego State’s Billy White was named freshman of the year.
The first-team selections were BYU’s Lee Cummard and Trent Plaisted, New Mexico’s J.R. Giddens, San Diego State’s Lorenzo Wade and UNLV’s Wink Adams.
Cummard and Giddens were named co-players of the year.
In the MWC women’s awards, the Utes dominated with Leilani Mitchell winning player of the year and newcomer of the year honors and Elaine Elliott named as coach of the year. Also, Morgan Warburton joined Mitchell on the first team and Kalee Whipple was named to the second team.
