Utes need last-minute shooters besides Kepkay

All six of Utah’s six conference games have gone down to the final minute. In four of the losses, the common denominator has been a last-second miss by Tyler Kepkay.
Kepkay did it again Saturday afternoon with the Utes trailing by three points. With 8 seconds left, Kepkay drove down the floor and rather than putting up a 3-pointer or looking for someone else for a 3-pointer, he ran all the way in for a layup, which only left the Utes with a 1-point loss rather than a chance at overtime.
The question I have is, why is Kepkay always the one to take the last shot? Why does he always have the ball in his hands at the end of close games?
Let’s recall a few of the Utes’ other last-minute losses.
In the home loss to BYU, Kepkay missed a running 10-footer with Utah down one and then took the desperation 3-pointer with Utah down three.
At New Mexico, in a tie game, Kepkay missed a long 3-pointer with 3 seconds left.
Down three against Wyoming, Kepkay tried an off-balance 3-pointer with under 10 seconds to play.
I give Kepkay credit for wanting the ball in clutch situations and having the guts to take the important shots. But at this point, the Utes should be looking for other players to step up after Kepkay’s failures.
Johnnie Bryant, who is shooting 45.6 percent from 3-point range, is the obvious choice, but other teams make an extra effort to cover him. However, why not let him bring the ball up court and try a 3-pointer.
How about Lawrence Borha, who is shooting 46.4 percent from 3-point land? Or Shaun Green, who though having an off-year, can still drain the threes and is just behind Kepkay’s 40.0 percent at 38.5 percent.
I still haven’t given up on Kepkay, who could be a valuable asset next year with experience under his belt (and probably playing the off-guard spot more). But the Utes need to figure out a way to get other players to take last-second shots, besides Kepkay.
